i feel like i have to post this because i’ve done it for the past two weeks

mark began his talk this evening with a statement about the unusual nature of our topic… tonight we talk about the role of the individual in following Jesus.

He talked a bit about the most over spiritualized passage in the bible.. being luke 14… he talked about this in terms of Jesus, Paul’s, and bonhoffers perspective on the role of the individual…

It will be interesting for me to mull over the connections between consumerism and individualism and the spiritualization of suffering and self sacrifice. i will also be thinking about bonhoffers emphasis on what it means to give up the whole world and gain the church…. that is an espescilally crazy concept for me, when just 2 years ago i thought the church would never be anything but a dog and pony show

after reading the blog of my friend ben douglas, i was reminded of how funny the deep thoughts by jack handy really are..

He was a cowboy, mister, and he loved the land. He loved it so much he made a woman out of dirt and married her. But when he kissed her, she disintegrated. Later, at the funeral, when the preacher said, “Dust to dust,” some people laughed, and the cowboy shot them. At his hanging, he told the others, “I’ll be waiting for you in heaven–with a gun.”

i think the summa theologica ought to be completed through wiki…maybe aquinas was just born waaay to early.. he just needed the help of millions of internet users to help him finish. by the way, if you’re not using ( or wasting time with ) the wikipedia you are really missing one of the most philosophically interesting technologies of our time. I’d really like to listen to a few political science buffs talk about the implications of this thing. I’m going to start a religion that worships the spirit of the internet. as a follower of this religion you must practice the discipline of solitude by sitting at your desk for at least 8 hours a day. You must also get frequent screen headaches, be slightly overweight and be very very lonely. O and one other thing.. out of relational desperation you have to exagerate about yourself on your myspace page.
